Susan Eyre

About Town

29 Feb – 22 March 2008

The Toilet Gallery presents the first solo exhibition of Susan Eyre who has created mixed media installations using digital and silkscreen print on fabric. Within her practice she explores the synthetic experience of nature within the urban landscape and the desires that determine the absorption of the natural world into the design aesthetic of the city.

The installations at the Toilet Gallery offer the viewer an immersive experience through the use of scale, inviting them to peer into staged worlds where the artifice inherent in fashioning our surroundings is made overt.

Re:construction provides a glimpse into a miniature dream-like world inspired by the myth of paradise but constructed from the everyday images of pot plants and items found around the artist’s home. It focuses on the seductive qualities of a natural world fragmented within the city that beguiles us into believing we still have access to nature. Reduced to a sliver amidst a sea of grey the sumptuous vision turns out to be nothing more than an appropriation, an echo of a desire for a nature that is sublime.

Eden Walk confronts the haphazard evolution of the urban landscape where the skyline is at the mercy of the town planner and the vagaries of commerce and parochial politics. The viewer is placed in the back streets and alleys where the clean architectural visions that dictate the public face of buildings are forgotten but where the backstage melting pot of construction and dereliction takes on an organic quality. This random growth in the built environment is shown in contrast with the formal and saccharin consequences achieved when nature is subjected to modification in the search for perfection.
