This work considers what new geology might be formed from the cocktail of ingredients disposed of in our landfill sites. ‘Binformation’ uses the seductive qualities of colour and pattern to attract attention to the problem of waste and the uncertain results of our behaviour in dealing with waste.

The contents of kitchen bins have been photographed as found and overlaid onto an image of rock strata. From each bin, crystals are growing, forming the possible gemstones of the future.

The details of the kitchen waste are still visible within the formation of the crystals. The kitchen bin is a surprisingly private space laden with guilt and there is a certain amount of voyeurism in seeing what other people have put in their bin. The number of recyclables caught on route to landfill demonstrates the problem we still have in relating our behaviour to wider issues.
